Brief and to the point about family benefits:

If you are working legally in Denmark, you are entitled to family benefits for children under the age of 18 on the same basis as Danish citizens. The children do not have to reside in Denmark. It is sufficient that one of the parents works in Denmark either seasonally or permanently.

How much money am I due for my children?

The amount paid depends on the set annual rates, the age of the child and the length of employment or residence in Denmark and/or the EU. In general, the older the child, the smaller the allowance.

Child allowance by age. rates for 2026
0-2 years5370 kr. per quarter
3-6 years 4248 kr. per quarter
7-14 years 3342 kr. per quarter
15-17 years 1114 kr per month

When is the money paid out ?

Money for children i.e. at the age of 0 to 14 years old Are paid on a quarterly basis ie.

  • For the period from 01.10 to 31.12 - 20th of January
  • For the period from 01.01 to 31.03 - April 20.
  • For the period from 01.04 to 30.06 - 20th of July
  • For the period from 01.07 to 30.09 - 20. october

Money for youth between 15 to 18 years old Are paid on the 20th of each month.

NOTE: If the above dates fall on a non-working day or a holiday, the money is paid on the preceding working day.

How to get family benefit ?

If the child was born in Denmark, you do not have to do anything, the benefit will be paid automatically.

If your children live in Poland or another EU country, you must apply for the benefit yourself by filling out an application and attaching the relevant documents, i.e. a clear scan:

  • copy of the contract - employment in Denmark ,
  • birth certificate of the child or children
  • confirmation of cohabitation

800+ benefit vs family benefit in Denmark ?

What country pays and how much money for children depends on the parents' work situation anyway:

  • If, for example, the child's father works in Denmark, and the child's mother does not work in Poland (she is not economically active, does not pay KRUS), then Poland pays the full 800+ and Denmark pays the full benefit according to the table above,

  • If, for example, the child's father works in Denmark and the child's mother works in Poland, Poland pays 800+ and Denmark pays the difference, if any, which is what is due in Denmark minus 800 PLN.

How long does it take to process an application ?

The Danish authority on average reports that by 33 weeksand processes incoming applications. In addition, the Danish office contacts, the relevant Polish Office to verify the information, usually waiting for a response from the Polish office takes the most time, so you must be patient.

After the application is verified and approved by the office, you get the decision on the e-box or if you don't have MItID then a letter by traditional mail.

It is also worth adding that the office will calculate your family benefit Up to 3 years back (If you were working in Denmark at the time).

Our comments

Please note that if one parent works in Poland and the other in Denmark, receiving Danish child benefit “pays off” until the child/children are 3 years old. In Poland, we receive monthly 800 PLN per child - regardless of age, which amounts to 2,400 PLN per quarter, while in Denmark per child over 4 years old we get 4,248 kr, which is a similar amount after taking into account the exchange rate.
